River questions become easy when you can place the source on a blank map and name two tributaries. Himalayan rivers are generally perennial and younger. Peninsular rivers are older, and many depend on the monsoon. Most large peninsular rivers flow east into the Bay of Bengal. Narmada and Tapi are the famous west-flowing exceptions.

A blank-map routine

Draw India in thirty seconds. Mark the Himalaya, the Vindhyas, and the Western Ghats. Place Gangotri, Amarkantak, and Mahabaleshwar. Draw the Ganga east, the Narmada west, and the Godavari east. Add one dam you actually know: Bhakra on the Sutlej, Hirakud on the Mahanadi, Nagarjuna Sagar on the Krishna, or Sardar Sarovar on the Narmada. If you cannot point to it, do not memorise a second dam yet.
